Greetings,

A few words about the upcoming SLAM (Student Literacy and Media) Showcase.  Up until now we have been incentivizing kids for reading the titles, but now we shift toward creating projects for submission into the county showcase. This packet will give you more info if your student chooses to submit a project for consideration at our local showcase during bookfair. Our winners get the honor of attending and representing us at the District showcase in April.

First check out the school districts SLAM resources for a description of the festival and for the reading lists.( I have included a link below) All books are available through the media center or on Axis360 (the district’s library eBook platform.)

Library Media Services / SLAM Showcase (hillsboroughschools.org)

If your student is interested in participating,  have them come and sign up with Mr. Tsourakis in the media center by 2-3-23.  This is totally voluntary. Even if your student chooses not to do a formal project encourage them to read the books so they can receive incentives and attend the year end slam party!

SLAM Showcase Overview

The SLAM Showcase program is designed to promote a love of reading among our students.  It encourages students to read a variety of books and respond authentically to their reading via digital and artistic expression.  Students participate by reading books they select from their grade level’s Florida award nominee list (Florida Literacy Association, Sunshine State Young Reader Award and Florida Teens Read).  Students can then choose to respond through artistic expression and/or digital expression.  Each school celebrates the student work at a site SLAM Showcase and submits outstanding entries from each Division/Category for the District event in spring of each year.  The district SLAM Showcase event is a celebration of reading, the FL Award books and students with an exhibition of each school’s outstanding student work and recognitions.

Who can participate?

Students enrolled in grades K through 12 in Hillsborough County Public Schools who attend participating schools and read books from their grade level’s current year Florida Awards program lists (Florida Literacy Association, Sunshine State Young Readers and Florida Teens Read) may participate. Each school must indicate their intent to participate by the yearly deadline date.

How are students selected to represent their school at the district SLAM Showcase?

Each school will hold a school site SLAM Showcase to celebrate the work of all participating students.  The Library Media Specialist (SLAM Coordinator) will arrange for judging for each Division and Category.  The judges will select one piece of exemplary work in each Division and Category to represent the school site at the district SLAM Showcase.
